Are you looking to teach others a valuable skill, work in a fast-paced environment and earn a seasonal income; all while enjoying the great outdoors? The Sudbury Yacht Club is looking for a motivated, creative and dependable team player to fill the role of SAILING SCHOOL INSTRUCTOR for the 2025 sailing season.
The SYC supports the sailing community of Sudbury and promotes both recreational and competitive sailing. We are a family-oriented club, open to all who share a common interest in the great outdoors, the physics of travel by wind, and the beauty of sailing on a lake right in the heart of our city. In our 60 years of existence, we have provided youth and older adults alike, with the opportunities to practise an environmentally friendly international sporting activity. Our members have gone on to compete at provincial, national, and even international sailing events, helping put Greater Sudbury on the map.
Type of position: Contract, Seasonal
Pay: starting at $ 18.75 per hour
Hours: 20 to 35 hours a week, for a minimum of 8 weeks

Expected start date: June 2024
Language: English a requirement, French an asset
TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide direct training and supervision to sailing school students: children, teens and adult learners;
Prepare lesson plans, deliver the CANSail curriculum and ensure the safety of the students both on and off the water;
Supervise and monitor the progress of students;
Ensure all students are dropped off and picked up by a parent/guardian each day.
The sailing instructor’s role is integral to the successful operations of the sailing school. They work hand in hand with their peers, volunteers, the manager of the Sailing School and other members of the Yacht Club.
In addition to carrying-out all the tasks and the responsibilities of the instructors, the LEAD instructor’s tasks and responsibilities include:
Communication with parents/guardians (providing information about the lessons and schedule, answering questions, and booking lessons;
Supervising, assisting and preparing work schedules for the other instructors; What skills will the participant develop during this placement?
REQUIREMENTS
Valid Pleasure Craft Operator card
CanSail 1-2 Instructor Certificate. (A Can Sail 3-4 Instructor Certificate is an Asset.)
Must be in Good Standing with Ontario Sailing Association including proof of insurance through OSA
Wear and use of safety equipment, including but not limited to PFD, closed toe shoes, and high visibility gear
SYC training is mandatory for all new staff members
